Challenges Young Adults with Cancer Commonly Face

A cancer diagnosis can turn your world upside down, especially when it happens during some of life’s biggest milestones.

Maybe you’re studying for exams, building your career, planning your future, or starting a family. Instead of thinking about your next adventure, you’re suddenly faced with medical appointments, treatment decisions and uncertainty about what comes next.

If this sounds familiar, know this: you are not alone.

Strong Olive is a community created for young adults aged 18 to 45 who have been affected by cancer. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed, are undergoing treatment, adjusting to life after cancer or supporting someone you love, we’re here to help you find connection, understanding and hope.

What is Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer?

Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer refers to cancer diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 39. While cancer is more common in older adults, hundreds of young people in Singapore receive a cancer diagnosis every year.
According to the Singapore Cancer Registry, diagnoses among adults under 40 increased by 34% between 2003–2007 and 2019–2023. On average, around 350 to 550 young adults are diagnosed with cancer each year in Singapore.

Some of the more common cancers diagnosed in young adults include lymphoma, testicular cancer, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, melanoma and certain sarcomas.

Because cancer is often considered uncommon in younger people, symptoms may sometimes be mistaken for stress, fatigue or less serious conditions. This can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

But behind every statistic is a person with dreams, responsibilities and plans that have suddenly been interrupted.
And while cancer may change your journey, it doesn’t define who you are.

How Cancer Can Affect Your Life as a Young Adult

A cancer diagnosis affects far more than your physical health. For many young adults, it arrives during a time of building careers, pursuing education, forming relationships or planning for the future. Alongside treatment, you may find yourself navigating emotional, social and practical challenges that your peers are not experiencing.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Life after cancer may look different, but it can still be meaningful and fulfilling. With the right support, trusted resources and a community that understands, many young adults find new ways to move forward with resilience and hope.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment or navigating life after cancer, remember that you don’t have to face the journey alone. Finding the right support early can help you cope with challenges, build confidence and reconnect with the life that’s important to you.

Why Young Adult Cancer Is Different

Cancer doesn’t happen in isolation. It affects every part of your life.

As a young adult, you’re often navigating major milestones while managing treatment and recovery. You may be establishing your career, completing your studies, building relationships or planning for the future. Cancer can make those plans feel uncertain.

Your experience may also differ from that of older adults because your priorities and concerns are different.

Your diagnosis may not have been straightforward

Because cancer is less common among younger adults, symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for stress, overwork or sports injuries. Waiting for answers can be frustrating and emotionally exhausting.

You may feel like you don’t quite fit in

You’re no longer a child, but you may not relate to the experiences of much older cancer patients either. It can sometimes feel like there isn’t a space designed for people your age, which is why communities like Strong Olive matter.

Treatment affects more than your health

Alongside treatment, you may also be thinking about fertility, relationships, work, finances and your long-term future. These are deeply personal concerns that deserve just as much attention as your physical recovery.

Your friends may not fully understand

While your peers are travelling, advancing their careers or starting families, you’re managing appointments, scans and treatment. Even with supportive family and friends, it’s natural to feel misunderstood or isolated at times.

Life after treatment brings new challenges

Many people expect life to return to normal once treatment ends. But recovery often comes with new questions—returning to work, rebuilding confidence, managing fatigue, or coping with fears that cancer might come back. These feelings are common, and you don’t have to navigate them alone.

Why Community Matters

One of the most powerful parts of healing isn’t something you receive in a hospital. It’s finding people who genuinely understand what you’re going through.

People who have experienced the same uncertainty before a scan.

Who understand why a routine follow-up appointment can feel overwhelming.

Who know that celebrating the end of treatment can come with mixed emotions.

Connecting with others who share similar experiences can help you:

  • Feel less alone during treatment and recovery
  • Build emotional resilience through shared understanding
  • Learn practical coping strategies from others who have been there
  • Form genuine friendships that continue long after treatment ends
  • Find a safe space where you don’t have to explain yourself or pretend to be okay

At Strong Olive, we believe healing happens not only through medical care, but also through meaningful connections.

Wherever you are today, take the next step when you’re ready.
